All that glitters is NOT institution
------------------
The one day event will take place at the Whitechapel Gallery in October 2010 and showcase art video and performance works.
‘All that glitters is NOT institution’ is the sequel of last year’s ‘Scare in the Community’ art event at Core Arts in Homerton. Whilst ‘Scare in the Community’ reversed the typical idea of including ‘outsiders’ into mainstream culture by hosting the art event at the mental health art facility, ‘All that glitters is NOT institution’ sets out to test the institutional context itself.
Institutional critique is often accused of being institutionalized itself. On the other hand the delusion of the possibility of breaking free of the yoke of institution only intensifies the dependency on it as - put simply- one is never more tied to a system than when one defines oneself in terms of being free from it.
Equally, the aim of Care in the Community to close the asylums does not actually release patients into world of new found freedom but rather subjects them to smaller, more locally sited institutions which often duplicate much of the problems implicated with the big asylum.
Thus, despite our aims of breaking out, it seems that we are eternally trapped within institutions. ‘All that glitters is NOT institution’ aims to present art to scrutinize and challenge this seeming fait au accompli.
